Thief hit with 40-year sentence

Forty years in prison is a long time but that is exactly what the sentence handed down to convicted robber, New Montrose resident, Noel Butler is.

Butler was sentenced on Friday by Justice Frederick Bruce Lyle, on two separate charges of robbery after being found guilty by a nine-member jury. But what is fortunate for Butler is that his sentence will run concurrently, meaning that he will only have to do a 20 year prison sentence.

Butler was found guilty of the February 8, 2008 robbery of Shareen Gumbs and Kenisha Hinds at their Beachmont home. Evidence said that the two women were approached by three masked men, two armed with guns and one wielding a knife. The men fled the scene in the vehicle which was found abandoned at Cemetery Hill.

Police investigations finally led to the arrest of Butler who while on trial opted to take the witness stand in his own defense and denied being on the crime scene on February 8th.
