Ministers highlight importance of food safety

Minister of Health Dr. Douglas Slater and Minister of Agriculture Montgomery Daniel have both highlighted the importance of food safety.

The two ministers spoke on the issue while addressing the opening of a food safety and awareness training workshop organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Dr. Slater said that Agri-Business and Food Safety are very important to the country. He added that one of the main aims of the workshop was to aid in the nation’s quest for a healthy population. The Health Minister also stressed that food safety must be made a high priority as healthy clean foods should be one of the main aims of all food handlers. Dr. Slater further said that all the relevant stakeholders must work together to protect the nation’s food supplies in both Agriculture and Fisheries.

Meanwhile, Daniel called on farmers to ensure that food safety begins with them by adhering to international standards when farming. Minister Daniel added that Agriculture is a business and it must be competitive at all times.
